Project Title: Cosmic horror character

Review:

This year in games design I have learnt and developed skills in three major areas, these being digital 2D art 3D modelling and programming in unity, at the start of the year I was new to all of these programs and the techniques to use them. I feel that my skills in 2D art have progressed the most overall as I believe that it is the area where I produce the best and most well made work, it is for this reason that I have chosen to produce 2D art for my FMP and I will most likely continue to produce 2D art pieces in the future and may go to seek a carrier which uses this specialism. I have decided to not pursue the 3D modelling pathway for this FMP as while I feel that I have made a lot of progress in this field I also feel that i have a lot to learn and improve upon I also need to practice my unwrapping as I believe that is my weakest area in modelling, while I believe that texturing is my strongest area I also plan to create more 3D models at home and during the next year of the course. Another pathway which I did not choose to pursue during this final major project is the coding pathway my reason for deicing to do this is because I struggle with coding and find it difficult to produce much functioning coding work without the help of others and it is for these reason that I will not be continuing to do much coding work outside of mandatory skill lessons and project work.

This is a piece of concept art I produced for a recent project for which we had to produce video game enemy which would reside in that water. while the sketch is not fully complete I think that it has helped my develop my drawing skills specifically when drawing scales which will be useful for my current project.

This is a character concept that I produced for a previous project, this character is designed to be placed in a sci-fi shoot-em-up game similar to doom which is what the character is based on. I feel that creating the sketch has greatly improved my art skills and will help me with my current project when drawing detail and sharp objects.

Project concept:

My idea is a currently unnamed group of 4 cosmic horror characters with front and side views and brief annotations/ labels to describe and label parts of the creature. each creature will be designed to be disturbing and horrific looking in its own individual way. I will do this by designing the characters to take advantage of common fears and phobias to give them a general sense of terror. I feel that my characters will achieve this goal and will fit very well in the cosmic horror genre. Each character will also have a clear environment which it will have to look like it has adapted to survive in, for example, a creature which lives underground all the time will be very pale due to lack of sunlight and will lack eyes due to the lack of vision underground.

For this Project I will need to create a multitude of ideas generation sketches including ideas for arms, legs, tentacles, eyes, nostrils, mouths, ears, arms, whiskers, feelers, claws and lots of other unique biological components which I will use to create the final 4 cosmic horror characters, I will do this using Photoshop. I will gather inspiration and ideas for ideas generation by creating mood boards and gathering pins on Pinterest.

Evaluation:

I will keep an up to date development log of my work as to evaluate each stage of my work and then near the end of the project when my final character designs are completed I will look back on my development log and reflect on how well I kept to my plan and how well I caught up when I was behind. I will also look at my final character designs and evaluate their quality, how long they took to product and how well they link ed to my theme and pre-production research and ideas generation. In my development log I will also leave comments on how and why I have completed stages of the project and why I have chosen to complete in a certain way.

Research sources:

for this project I will use a multitude of different resources these will include both primary and secondary research. for primary research I will complete sketches of character outlines and body parts, take photos of book pages which feature characters or ideas related to my projects and testing out different art styles and drawing techniques in preparation for my final pieces. For my secondary research I will gather mood boards on cosmic horror using Pinterest, gather clips and images from films related to cosmic horror, create a playlist of YouTube tutorials on how to draw things I am unsure about and finally i will find clips and images from games related to cosmic horror.
