super Mario bros U
Is the gender representation appropriate?
I believe that the representation in this game is mostly appropriate but it could be improved slightly, Mario is represented as a strong male lead character who despite his broad body can jump very high and run very fast however the fact that he is Italian and has a moustache and in slightly broken English with a high pitched Italian accent. Also the representation of peach could do with some improvement as she is wearing a pink dress and pink is a stereotypical female colour also she is shown as helpless and always needing saving not doing anything for herself which while it displays her as essentially a fairy tail princess.
Does the representation accurately reflect their audience?
I feel that the mostly inoffensive nature of these represents suits their target audience of children and young adults well as they don’t care too much about the identity of the characters as they as the game has minimal story as it is a platformer.
Is sexuality represented appropriately?
This topic is not really discussed at all outside of the heterosexual relationship between peach and Mario and the characters gender being what they look like to avoid confusing new or young players however toad or their race is never given gender specific pronouns.
Is the race and ethnicity representation appropriate.
The race and ethnicity representation in Mario is very hard to pin down as the only characters which have stated ethnicities are Mario and Luigi and other than that you can
only guess the race or ethnicity of the characters and as most of the character is the games are not human and have do discernible race and do not identify as being from any place or country other than a few characters who say they are from the mushroom kingdom.
Does the race and ethnicity representation accurately reflect their audience
I believe that the representation or lack thereof is appropriate to the audience as the game is designed to be offensive and tries to avoid any mention of race or ethnicity at any point because mario is a platform game with little to no story and the main target audience is children so questions of race are not important to the game and would cause more issues than they would solve if they were implemented
Is the violence appropriate
The violence in Mario is appropriate as the only violence in the game is when Mario jumps on the goombas or during the boss fights in the game, however this violence this appropriate as it is brief and not graphic in anyway and while it is violence it is appropriate for for the games target audience which is children
Does violence play a major part in the game, if so, should it?
The violence in the Mario is in no way a major plot in the game and while the boss fights are required to progress to new worlds the violence involved in there levels are not important to the narrative and it shouldn’t be.
battle born
Is the gender representation appropriate?
i believe the the character representation in battleborn is appropriate as you can do equally well with one character as you can with another regardless of their gender or looks, and while some of the characters are represented badly this is only aesthetically
and they each have equal power in their respective areas as the women can be just as strong and powerful as the men and vise versa.
Does the representation accurately reflect their audience?
i believe the representation does accurately reflect their audience as this audience would be mostly teenager and young adults who are not concerned with the race or gender of their character and will chose which ever character fits their play style best or is the most powerful or best adapted for specific game modes and they are not going to choose a character based on their sex or race.
Is sexuality represented appropriately?
Sexuality in battlebron is not really mentioned at all as the characters do have backstories but they are not very long and do not mention anything about their sex or sexual preference and leaves it down to the player to decide based on whatever want to think and what the character looks like, this is a good way to approach this issue and works well for a game like battleborn which is not heavy on story and does not feature that much character interaction or character insight.
Is the race and ethnicity representation appropriate.
The race and ethnicity representation in battleborn is variable because while some of the characters represented well most of the characters are
very stereotyped such as the american called Montana, which is a state in america, who wields a mini gun and is lumberjack with a beard, large muscles and trucker hat. Also there is also EL DRAGÓN who is a Mexican wrestler and wears a luchador mask and the character Ambra who is Egyptian and does the snake walk in her charter intro. however while these character representations could be perceived as racist they are supposed to fit the heavily stylised and over the top style of the game.
Does the race and ethnicity representation accurately reflect their audience
While the representation of the races and ethnicity of the characters in battleborn is very stereotyped and could be seen as offensive it is supposed to be very over the top and comedic as this fits with the theme of the game which while there are some issues it does display a wide range of races and ethnicity’s which most games do not cover.
Is the violence appropriate
The violence in battleborn is appropriate as the violence depicted in the game shows no blood or cuts and hides physical contact against other plays with colorful effects, however the inclusion of guns does not make this game appropriate for children which is why this game has a teen rating.
Does violence play a major part in the game, if so, should it?
While the violence itself does not play a major part in the game the need to apply it on your enemy does as you are required to kill enemies to win the matches and this being a main part of the game is not a bad thing as it portrays this violence in a fun and inoffensive way which would be suitable for most audiences.
Dragon Age – inquisition
Is the gender representation appropriate?
The gender representation in Dragon Age-Inquisition is very good, giving the player the option to choose their gender and race at the start of the game and while the aesthetics of these characters could be seen as idealized as they are skinny and muscular with no way to alter them these models have no effect on game play and and the npcs both male and female are shown as capable and standing for what they believe in.
Does the representation accurately reflect their audience?
the representation does accurately reflect the games audience which is mostly teenagers and adults who want to create a character which may not accurately reflect them and prefer to have lots of choices to add variety to multiple play-throughs, and the game does this well by having those choices but not making one better than the others and allowing players to play how they want.
Is sexuality represented appropriately?
sexuality in dragon age is represented better than in a lot of games as the player can choose their sexuality and pressie romantic partners accordingly and while a lot of characters not not ave a sexual preference some of them do and this is a good thing because it allows the player to explore the other characters and discover thing about them they wouldn’t otherwise know.
Is the race and ethnicity representation appropriate.
the race and ethnicity representation in dragon age is very good as the game allows the player to decide what race and ethnicity they are even playing as different species they so choose, however these choices do not have that much effect on game play and character interaction other than some characters being weary of Quirinai as they are known as mercenary and thugs and elves being more friendly to fellow elves, this is a good thing as it also player to make choices in game that they wouldn’t normally make with little consequence.
Does the race and ethnicity representation accurately reflect their audience
the race and ethnicity representation suits the audience as the choice of race and ethnicity as it once again allows the player to choose who they are in the game and allows them to role-play as whoever they want to be with little consequence other than some minor dialogue which encores players to play through the game more than ones as different races to discover all of this dialogue.
Is the violence appropriate
I do believe the the violence in that game is appropriate for is rating as there is only minimal blood when you attack someone and there is no gore or detail to this however this game is not appropriate for children as you can kill people and animals which is fine as children are not the target audience for the game and the teen rating means they shouldn’t be playing it at all.
Does violence play a major part in the game, if so, should it?
it could be said that violence is a major part in this game as you are required to kill the enemies to progress though areas and to level up but these enemies almost always attack first and it is made very attack that if these enemies are not killed they will go on to harm others and world around them and the main antagonist of the game is trying to rip apart the entire dimensional plane that the world sits in so i believe that this violence is justified and necessary.
